DEPARTMENT of SOCIOLOGY

Gender Studies Minor

MINOR  |  BACHELOR OF ARTS  |  BACHELOR OF SCIENCE

Explore the complexity and mutability of gender across time and space. Study the cyborg and the pink tax, the relationship between equity and equality, representations of bodies on social media, Indigenous matriarchy, shifting masculine norms, queer and transgender rights and the rise of feminism as a transnational movement.

In this interdisciplinary program, you are guided by instructors from a number of departments, including anthropology, English, Spanish, social work and sociology. In the Gender Studies minor, you forge your own path toward graduate studies and careers in many fields, such as communications, human resources, law, marketing, medicine, policy analysis, psychology and social work.

What to expect

In the Gender Studies minor, you gain knowledge and tools to address many of the structural changes taking place in our society. Many of our graduates go on to work for private, government and non-profit sectors.

In this program, you learn about:

  • Feminist theories and foundations
  • Indigenous and postcolonial feminisms
  • Intersectionality and literature
  • Archaeology of gender
  • Philosophy of sex and sexuality
  • Sociology of gender and sexuality
  • Gender and technology
  • Women’s history
  • Gendered violence
  • Gender and social justice

Opportunities to conduct your own research are available at all levels of learning, and you are also introduced to the fascinating research undertaken by experts in the field. Guest lecturers have covered topics such as the use of surveillance technology in public spaces and the role of gender norms in the history of librarianship, while student research has explored ideas about maternal mortality rates in North America, the publication and reception of Slyvia Plath’s novel The Bell Jar (1963) and Black women’s contributions to hip hop music.
