Film minor
Film influences culture, whether as popular entertainment or as elite artistic and philosophical expression. The study of film builds interpersonal and intercultural skills, research expertise and visual communication know-how, providing you with marketable experience in an increasingly media-connected world.
In this minor, you can choose an analytical or experiential approach. In the former, you investigate the cultural, historical, and aesthetic impact of film in society, enhancing your analytical skills. In the latter, you focus more on film making, through courses such as film editing and scoring, screenwriting and production.
What to expect
Upon the completion of this minor, you will be able to:
- Understand film theory and evaluate films using various theoretical frameworks
- Demonstrate an understanding of the history of film—the development of the film industry, emergence of various periods and movements in cinema, and how technology has informed changes in film structure and narrative
- Conduct film criticism using a variety of critical standpoints
- Demonstrate an understanding of the aesthetic forms and values of film
- Articulate the impact of film on cultural norms and practices, including ways in which individual films critique or advance social values, and the relationship between ethical theory and practice
- Explore film productions in terms of key concepts in film production and analysis
- Apply the principles and best practices of film making and production
