MacEwan University awards a Doctor of the University, honoris causa, to individuals whose achievements have had significant impact in their areas of expertise, including academic luminaries, athletes and community builders as well as performers, philanthropists and public intellectuals in Edmonton as well as central and northern Alberta.

Members of the MacEwan community—faculty, staff, students and alumni—are all invited to submit nominations based on the criteria outlined above. Honorary doctorates will be awarded at MacEwan’s spring and fall convocation ceremonies.

Selection process

Honorary doctorate nominations will be reviewed by a committee that represents all facets of the MacEwan community, with a particular focus on academics. The committee assists the president in making a recommendation to the Board of Governors, which then makes the final selection. The committee includes:

  • President and Vice-Chancellor
  • Provost & Vice-President, Academic
  • 1 Dean representative
  • 3 Faculty representatives
  • 1 student representative
  • 1 staff representative
  • 1 alumni advisory council representative
