CMPT 497: Computer Science Internship
This course gives you practical experience in a work environment. You engage in work‐integrated learning through employment or an internship in industry, and you learn the professional aspects of being a computer scientist, including work and ethics. CMPT 497 is an 8‐month internship course.

Important information
- CMPT 497 is a full-year (8‐month, Fall through Winter term) internship course. In the Fall term, you attend lectures on job readiness and search for potential internship opportunities. In the Winter term, you work at your placement.
- The total course hours are a minimum of 90 hours but can involve more depending on the placement.
- This course is only offered once a year, starting in the Fall term.
- You must apply for the internship course and are ranked according to:
- declared major in computer science
- seniority
- availability in the Winter term
- academic standing
- eligibility to work in Canada
- To maximize your chances of being accepted into the course, you should:
- be majoring in computer science
- be in your final year when the course starts
- have a competitive CGPA in CMPT courses
- have completed most of your senior-level courses in your major
- If you don’t meet all these requirements, you are still encouraged to apply. You’ll receive an email by April 30 with the steps you need to take to apply and get departmental approval.

Application and enrolment procedure
- Complete and submit the CMPT 497 Application Form along with the required documents.
You will receive a link to the CMPT 497 Application Form in an email if you have completed CMPT 395 by April 30.
- Applications for the course will begin being processed on June 1.
- If your application is successful, you will be given department consent and a permission number to enrol in myStudentSystem.
Applications submitted after May 31 will be added to a waitlist and processed later in batches, based on any remaining seats available at the end of June, July and August.
