DEPARTMENT of HUMANITIES

nêhiyawêwin

Once the most widely spoken language in Canada, this versatile language was under threat of being lost. However, a resurgence in speaking Cree is taking place across the nation, among Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners.

Cree settlements and reservations are scattered throughout Canada, from Quebec to the foothills of Alberta. Residents in a few settlements in northern British Columbia also speak Cree. It is difficult to capture the rich and vivid colloquial and idiomatic nature of Cree in written text, but these courses introduce enough practical information for you to understand and begin to speak this beautiful language. Learn Cree grammar, vocabulary and patterns of speech when you study nêhiyawêwin.
