Gateway Exams

If you have not taken the required high school course(s) or achieved the grades you need to enrol in an introductory mathematics or statistics course, you may be interested in writing a Gateway Exam.

If you pass the Gateway Exam for MATH 114, STAT 151 OR STAT 161, you will meet the prerequisites for that course.

When deciding between taking the prerequisite course or writing the exam, remember that while successful completion of a Gateway Exam allows you to complete a prerequisite more quickly, a course-based prerequisite tends to prepare you more fully.

Exam details

The course-based prerequisite for MATH 114 is a final grade of 80% or better in Math 30-1 OR credit in Math 31 OR a minimum final grade of C- in MATH 099. If you do not have a course-based prerequisite, you may substitute successful completion of the MATH 114 Gateway Exam.

The exam covers material from high school, with special emphasis on algebra, trigonometry and functions. The practice test below gives you an idea of the type of questions to expect.

The test is 90 minutes long with 20 multiple choice questions. Calculators are not permitted. A passing grade is 12/20. You may write the MATH 114 Gateway Exam a maximum of two times, once per term.
