SCHOOL of BUSINESS

Portugal International Study Tour

Explore Lisbon’s rich cultural heritage, discover how business comes alive in a global context and earn credit while you do it. A study tour lets you step out of the classroom and experience what it’s like to learn, collaborate and problem-solve in a new environment.

MacEwan’s commitment to building globally minded graduates is part of our Teaching Greatness vision—but for you, it means access to meaningful real-world learning in countries you might not otherwise visit. Study tours are three-credit courses, and you can take more than one to explore different destinations throughout your degree. While the tours are designed with business students in mind, they’re open to students from across the university who want to broaden their horizons.

Frequently asked questions

Lisbon, Portugal, is an engaging destination for a study tour that offers a mix of history, economic transformation and global business relevance. As one of Europe’s fastest‐growing tech hubs, Lisbon gives you first‐hand experience with international business practices, innovative ecosystems and sustainable development initiatives. The city’s cultural heritage, strategic location and entrepreneurial energy make it an ideal place to explore global commerce in a setting that offers insight into the realities of working in diverse economic environments.

The study tour includes organized visits to Portuguese companies across industries, where you engage directly with international business operations, management practices and market strategies in a European context. You also take part in a guided city tour that provides cultural and historical context to support your learning experience. Scheduled free time lets you explore Lisbon independently, encouraging personal discovery and reflection.

While the study tour is aimed primarily at business students, a limited number of seats are available to non-business students on a first-come, first-served basis. For your application to be accepted, you must:

  • Be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or higher).
  • Have completed 24 MacEwan University or post-secondary transfer credits. You could participate after completing just two terms of study at MacEwan.
  • Contact the business academic advisors to enrol.

If you have already taken a study tour course, you must have a grade of 75% or higher in your professionalism/contribution component from previous study tours to be eligible for another tour.

You can take the course more than once as long as it is to a different destination. Please confirm with a program advisor whether you are allowed to use a second study tour as a credit course toward your program of study.

All MacEwan students, including those enrolled in non-business programs, are welcome to enrol in business study tours while seats are available. Please confirm with your program advisor if this course can be used for credit toward your program of study.

This is a 3-credit course, and tuition fees apply accordingly. The Portugal tour costs $2,700.

The following items are included in the study tour fee of $2,700:

  • student accommodations (double occupancy) in a hotel such as Hotel Dom Carlos or an equivalent
  • all breakfasts and two dinners
  • field visits to Portuguese organizations and cultural sites/museums and one university campus tour and lecture
  • field guide and ground transportation to programmed activities
  • public transportation pass, which is the main means of transportation, for the duration of the study tour

The following items are not included in the program fee of $2,700:

  • tuition fees
  • airfare
  • airport transfer (note: getting from the airport to your hotel is easy and convenient)
  • travel/health insurance
  • visas and vaccinations (if applicable)
  • anything that is not included explicitly in the program

Yes, if you are not already covered under an insurance policy. Please note that your SAMU insurance may not be sufficient. You are encouraged to double-check with the insurer to make sure you have proper health and trip cancellation coverage.

It is recommended that you wait until the enrolment period ends and the final decision is made before you buy your tickets.

Like any other course, a study tour may be cancelled with full reimbursement by the School of Business. This could happen if the number of students enrolled by the closing date is too low to proceed with the tour. You will receive a confirmation email from the faculty leader after the tour is confirmed.

If you are ready to enrol, please contact a business advisor (business@macewan.ca), who will add you to the tour if you meet the requirements.

Please note that the number of seats is limited, and enrolments are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Your seat is confirmed after you pay the fees. Late applications are placed on a waitlist in case new seats become available.

Below is a tentative schedule to give you an idea of what to expect. Please note this is subject to change as details and availability are confirmed with local partners and service providers.
