Certificate of Achievement in Sustainability Studies
Sustainability theories and practices are increasingly important in our ever‐changing world. Theories and practices can be applied not only to the environment but also to the economy and social systems. This certificate is truly interdisciplinary in nature with applications in business, government, education and more. Students can build on their current or past post‐secondary education. The Certificate of Achievement in Sustainability Studies consists of 2 core courses in addition to 2 electives with a sustainability focus. Learners do not need to be enrolled full‐time to access the courses.

Duration and delivery
Each course is 39‐45 hours, and there are 4 courses required to complete the certificate.
You do not need to be enrolled full‐time to access the courses. Prerequisites may be required to access certain courses. Not all courses listed are available to Continuing Education students; sustainability‐focused courses must also appear on the Open Studies List.
Courses may be online or on campus. Students have a maximum of 2 academic years or approval of the program to complete the required courses.

Fees
Course fees vary depending on your primary program of study. Students not enrolled in another undergraduate program at MacEwan will pay Open Studies course fees. The cost of completing all 12 credits in the certificate ranges from $1752 ‐ $2352.

There are no admission requirements for this program, but we do need you to apply by answering a few simple questions. This information will help us support you in your sustainability journey and ensure you are awarded the certificate upon completion of the program.

Students can apply for the Sustainability certificate on this webpage! There is an Apply Now button at the top of the page. This is more of a “declaration of intent to complete” rather than a true application, as there is no selection committee. Once you have applied, you are part of the program!

Once you have completed the requirements for the sustainability certificate as indicated on the website, please email SustainabililtyCA@macewan.ca with the following details:
- Required Courses Completed (6 credits): Example: SUST 201, SUST 302
- Elective Courses Completed (6 credits): Example: BUSN 201, INDG 200
The courses in the Sustainability certificate must be completed within a two‐year period of each other; if you previously completed a course on the required or elective lists that fit within the two‐year period, they do count towards the certificate.
Yes! If you completed some or all the required and elective courses as part of a degree, certificate, or diploma program they will still count towards the certificate.
The courses are all 3-credit full undergraduate courses. The certificate is offered through the School of Continuing Education and is currently a Certificate of Achievement Sustainability Studies.
