As nurses, we need to be able to stay current in our skills of assessing information because we’re going to have patients who are very much engaged in the information they’re asking about.

Hyflex pilot program

MacEwan University School of Continuing Education (SCE) launched a pilot of a hyflex model of our Hospice Palliative Care post-diploma certificate in Fall 2022. Our aim is to improve access to high-quality education, whether you’re in a city centre or a rural community, and to build a strong interprofessional network for rural and remote healthcare providers.

We offered 30 regulated health professionals from all over Alberta an opportunity to participate in this fully-funded pilot. The pilot cohort will graduate in December 2023.

A hyflex model gives students the option to join their classes in-person or online, synchronously, or asynchronously, expanding access to the program beyond the local Edmonton-area healthcare community. The pilot aims to improve access to interprofessional hospice palliative care education for healthcare providers throughout Alberta, including those in rural and remote areas.

We are working with experts in instructional design and hospice palliative care to update the Hospice Palliative Care post-diploma certificate to reflect the truly interprofessional and diverse landscape of this specialty practice area. We will do our part to ensure this pilot is an excellent learning experience for students; but, as a pilot, we know that things won’t always run smoothly.

The pilot program is a part-time, instructor-led, hyflex program. This means students in the pilot cohort can attend in-person or online, synchronously or asynchronously.

Regardless of how they choose to attend, students can engage with all course content. In recognition of the time involved in testing and providing in-depth feedback on this newly revised program, all costs were waived for pilot students.

Depending on the semester, students spend between 10-21 hours per week engaged in course activities and studying:

  • 5-7 hours/week in instructional hours
  • 5-14 hours/week studying and completing assignments.

Classes started in Fall 2022 and the pilot cohort will graduate in December 2023. Classes follow the regular Academic Schedule with no classes from mid-April to August 2023.

All regulated health professionals with current Alberta registration/licensing were welcome to apply for the pilot program.

We received over 150 applications, and to ensure diverse interprofessional and geographical representation, applications were accepted and assessed on a rolling basis.
