Black History Month
Black History Month kicks off on February 1 with Tracking Black Canada – Trailblazers Edition for a virtual trip around Canada to highlight the often-forgotten history of early Black communities.
On February 2, a forum to explore the challenges of Creating While Black creates a space for Black History Month to intersect with the university’s 2022 Interdisciplinary Dialogue. Rochelle Ignacio, co-founder of Black-Owned Market (who shared her personal connection to MacEwan’s Black History Month with us) will join Alain Intwali and Bobby Tyndale on a panel to discuss how their Blackness impacts their ability to master digital content and storytelling or grow a grassroots organization into a sustainable business model.

The Black History Month Human Library is back for 2022, featuring a series of pre-recorded “books” and a live event with MLA David Shepherd, who is also a MacEwan alum. Join him on February 15 for Learning to Be Black: Discovering an Identity I Didn’t Know I Had.
(ICYMI, Black History Month 2021 featured personal stories from Rochelle Igacio, James Odera and Cathryn Heslep as part of an online Human Library – you can still check out their “human books” here.)
On February 16, the History and Classics Club is partnering with the Office of Human Rights, Diversity and Equity to host an online screening and discussion of I Am Not Your Negro (2016), Raoul Peck's award-winning documentary about the great American writer James Baldwin.
Co-founder of the Black Teachers Association Andrew Parker will talk about racism, Black history and Black educators in Alberta in a webinar on February 23. Join him for a discussion about Anti-Black and systemic racism and for a look at systemic changes necessary in education today.
