Two grants, which can fund multiple projects of up to $5,500 each, are making it even easier for MacEwan students to continue making a difference on campus and beyond.

The Indigenous Student Community Engagement Grant (Indigenous SCEG) invites applicants to partner with Indigenous communities and organizations on projects connected to art, music, culture and language.

“Our hope is to offer an opportunity for Indigenous students to be creative and to explore community projects and Indigenous research,” says Terri Suntjens, director of Indigenous Initiatives and kihêw waciston. “Projects could involve students working with a community member, Elder or Knowledge Keeper to do Indigenous research connected to culture and language, or art-based projects that involve beading and ribbon skirt making, music or even working remotely to create digital resources.”

The Student Community Engagement Grant (SCEG) is also back after a hiatus and now accepting applications for community-engaged projects, partnerships and conferences.

“MacEwan is a place-based institution and, as we return to greater in-person activity, it is important – and even urgent – for us all to be actively engaged in supporting local organizations within our community,” says Tim Tang, associate vice-president, Students. “This grant offers a unique funding opportunity for MacEwan students to interact and collaborate with the broader community in an effort to effect positive change.”

Past Student Community Engagement projects have included music students holding biweekly shows at Boyle Street Community Services to student groups hosting conferences, and MacEwan Ambassadors buying food to prepare and serve for families at Ronald McDonald House.

The deadline to apply for the current funding period is February 11. Students can also apply during other funding periods throughout the year (deadlines are March 31, September 30 and November 30).
