MacEwan University has announced the appointment of Jason Fung to the position of General Counsel.

“I am delighted to welcome Jason Fung as our new General Counsel,” says Dr. Annette Trimbee. “Jason’s diverse legal experience, coupled with his collaborative and collegial approach in reaching practical solutions, will be an excellent addition to our leadership team and to the university.”

Fung most recently served as a senior legal counsel with the Department of Justice and Solicitor General at the Government of Alberta. He has served as lead counsel on many high-profile, province-wide, initiatives including the Calgary 2026 Olympic bid, establishing Alberta Innovates and the Alberta Enterprise Corporation, and in negotiating large scale public and private procurements. Fung is very familiar with public agencies and has extensive experience in providing strategic and legal advice on privacy, intellectual property, and risk management matters.

Fung enjoys mentoring others in his area of expertise, technology, and intellectual property law, and has also chaired the Technology Law Practise Group and the Intellectual Property Law Practise Group.

“I am looking forward to serving the MacEwan University community,” says Jason Fung. “The future looks bright for MacEwan and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a dynamic and forward-thinking post-secondary institution.”

The search was led by executive search firm Optimum Talent, who worked with an internal advisory committee, chaired by President Trimbee. Fung’s strong legal background and ability to take on large scale diverse projects across multiple ministries stood out to the selection committee. His ability to work with a variety of stakeholders and build solutions in a collaborative manner made him the ideal candidate.

Fung received his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta and his Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie. He has volunteered with the United Nations Development Programme, Lawyers Without Borders, and the Centre for International Environmental Law.

Fung is a long-time resident of Alberta, having lived in Edmonton since 2007, and St. Albert before that.

Fung will officially join MacEwan University on February 10, 2022.
