The Battle of Alberta is all set to go as the Edmonton Oilers take on the Calgary Flames in round two of the NHL playoffs.

MacEwan University is showing support for our downtown neighbours and will be cheering the Oilers on to victory in the best-of-seven game series.

“Our friends at Mount Royal University in Calgary disagree with our assessment,” says Dr. Annette Trimbee, president and vice-chancellor. “So we’ve decided to make it a little more interesting and get into the spirit of the Battle of Alberta.”

Once the dust settles the losing university will fly the flag of the winning team on a flagpole on campus for a day. Both universities will also be fundraising to donate at least $1,000 to their student food banks.

“The last time there was a Battle of Alberta in the playoffs, MacEwan had yet to bring all our students downtown to one campus,” says Trimbee. “In fact, the Oilers weren’t downtown either! MacEwan is excited to cheer on the Blue and Orange in the playoffs.”

“I look forward to seeing Mount Royal flying the Oilers flag later this month – and it’s fantastic to know that along with all the playoff excitement, there will also be plenty of support for university foodbanks!” says Myles Dykes, president of the Students’ Association of MacEwan University.

Mount Royal University believes otherwise.

“It’s obvious, the Flames are the superior squad and we’re confident of victory,” said MRU President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Tim Rahilly. “We’re pleased to get involved in this wager for a good cause as we cheer on the Flames, who get straight 'A’s' for their performance in the playoffs so far. We look forward to seeing the Flaming 'C' flag flying on MacEwan’s campus.”
