Andrew Bartholet, BCom ’21, knows that opportunity can knock anywhere – even at a transit stop. Back in February 2020 he had finished classes for the day and was waiting for a bus just under MacEwan’s clock tower when he felt a tap on his shoulder.
The conversation that followed was the beginning of a professional relationship that would see Bartholet using his new marketing skills to grow LaundryWell, an app-based laundry pick-up and delivery startup (like a ride-share service, but for laundry).
“It was a chance to get involved at the very beginning as a new company was being developed,” says Bartholet. “I learned so much about being open to change, responding to industry changes and filling a consumer need.”
Now a MacEwan grad, Bartholet has transitioned from LaundryWell’s marketing intern to the company’s marketing director, and spends his days letting everyone know how to make laundry and dry-cleaning convenient, easy and fast.
Over the past two years, Bartholet has also helped create opportunities for other MacEwan students and recent graduates (including computer science alum Dhan Moonian who developed the company’s website). So far, a total of four MacEwan students have joined LaundryWell as interns – supporting the start-up with everything from website development to marketing and customer service.
Bartholet says he’s happy he chose to start his career with a small business and looks forward to continuing to come up with creative ways for LaundryWell to expand its client and service base.
MacEwan’s Alumni Office also hopes a new Alumni Business Directory that is currently in development will help alumni-owned businesses in the community.
