Edmonton is the first Canadian city to be named as a top learning city by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Other network member cities include Hamburg, Shanghai and Beijing and they are all joined together by a shared commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and learning. Their common goals include enhancing social inclusion, economic development and cultural prosperity.

“It is fantastic that Edmonton has been named Canada’s first UNESCO Learning City,” says Dr. Annette Trimbee, president and vice-chancellor. “Located in the heart of Edmonton’s downtown, MacEwan’s faculty and students are connected and passionate about creating real solutions to the social, economic and environmental issues we face. Being part of the international community as a Learning City allows us to collaborate with our peers in new ways in the pursuit of inclusive and sustainable development.”

Trimbee joined Edmonton mayor Amarjeet Sohi, members of city council, other education leaders and UNESCO’s Canadian officials on October 5 for an announcement of the achievement at the Stanley A. Milner Library.

“As a community of learners, we celebrate this opportunity to connect with like-minded cities around the world,” says Sohi. “Our openness, cultural diversity and curiosity make Edmonton an excellent addition to the Global Network of Learning Cities. Our ambition is to attract a million more people over the coming few decades to our city of eager learners, energetically looking to embrace new ideas, emerging technologies, and ways of working and learning.”

According to city officials, becoming a member of this UNESCO network represents the culmination of years of dedication across the community to lifelong learning for everyone

“We are pleased that Edmonton is the first Canadian city to become a UNESCO Learning City, an international designation that recognizes its ongoing efforts and commitment to promote lifelong learning for all,” says Roda Muse, Secretary General, Canadian Commission for UNESCO. “The City of Edmonton fosters a culture of learning that promotes inclusive and sustainable development and growth for its citizens.”
