The 2023/24 MacEwan University Theatre Season will feature four productions ranging from modern-day musicals to timeless classics. Students will be entertaining audiences in the Triffo Theatre and the Tim Ryan Theatre Lab throughout the academic year.
“We are thrilled to be producing four shows this season as our performers will be challenged to take to the stage in everything from light-hearted musicals to a Shakespearean classic,” says Dawn Sadoway, program coordinator and assistant professor, Department of Theatre. “I am excited to see what kind of range our performers have as they move from one show onto the next.”
The season opens with the head-scratchingly named [title of show], running from November 1 to 5 in the Tim Ryan Theatre Lab.
Named after the space on a theatre festival’s application form which asks for the show’s title, this beautiful chamber musical follows four friends on their journey through the gauntlet of creative self-expression. They learn lessons about themselves as people, friends and artists. [title of show] is a love letter to musical theatre and the joy of collaboration.
The second show of the season is Legally Blonde: The Musical, running from November 29 to December 3 in the Triffo Theatre.
A fabulously fun, award-winning musical based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde: The Musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances – OMG! This musical is so much fun it should be illegal!
The season’s third show is Twelfth Night, running from February 14 to 18 in the Tim Ryan Theatre Lab.
One of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, the show features a shipwreck, orphaned twins and one or two love triangles. You’ll laugh at the silliness of characters pursuing life, love and happiness. Shenanigans ensue!
The season wraps up with Sunday in the Park with George, running from March 20 to 24 in the Triffo Theatre.
Inspired by the painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's masterpiece, Sunday in the Park with George merges past and present into beautiful, poignant truths about life, love and the creation of art. One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, this is a Pulitzer Prize winner and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards.
Subscriptions for the season are already sold out. “We are incredibly proud of the confidence our audiences continue to show in our program year after year,” says Sadoway. “Even if you aren’t a subscriber, there are plenty of tickets left for you to come out and join us for any of the upcoming performances this year.”
Casual tickets for each show are now available at Tickets.MacEwan.ca or by calling the MacEwan box office at 780-497-4470, Monday through Friday, from 12 to 3 p.m.
