Join in on Black History Month celebrations, learn what healthy relationships look like, fall in love with one of the many Valentine’s Day events and find free food on campus in February. There are tons of free activities to check out this month!

Black History Month

Celebrate the contributions and achievements of Black Canadians all month long. Create an expression of your story of belonging at one of three art pop-ups on February 7, 13 and 27. If you prefer admiring art instead of making it, look for the Ribbon Rouge ArtSpace event on February 9.

Learn about one of the most loaded words in the English language during the virtual performance, Unpacking the N-Word. And finally, wrap up the month with the celebration of Black Stories of Belonging on February 28 – enjoy dancing, food and storytelling.

Dress for the celebration: pick up a limited edition Black History Month t-shirt at the bookstore (they’re only $12!) Check out the full list of Black History Month events at MacEwan.ca/BlackHistoryMonth.

Healthy Relationships Week

Spend February 12 to 16 learning how to cultivate healthy connections in your life.

Short on time? Activities like the quick interactive skills fair, make your own valentine and trivia where you can learn how to spot potential red flags in a relationship are fast stops.

If you have a bit more space in your schedule, join a talk and beading session about sexual and reproductive justice, learn about Your Brain on ‘Love’ or register for one of two Bringing in the Bystander® workshops – one is geared more toward students in Residence.

Hungry? Enjoy free bannock tacos on February 14 at kihêw waciston. You can also get fueled up with a free healthy breakfast from SAMU’s breakfast club on February 15.

For a different kind of nourishment, head to MAG for an art buffet and learn what this “art hive” has to offer.

Learn about English literature and creative writing

Led by undergraduate students, MacEwan’s Department of English is hosting some amazing speakers as part of the English Student Conference. Listen to – and learn from – incredible speakers on February 2 and 3, including award-winning keynote speaker, Jenna Butler. On February 5, MacEwan alum, Dr. Willow White will discuss gender-based environmental violence in the context of an 1824 autobiographical text about a Seneca woman’s relationship to the land.

If you’re looking to polish your own writing and presentations, register for the Writing Centre’s citation workshop on February 6 or check out the Beyond Bullet Points workshop, to make your presentations better.

Fit some travel into your studies

There are two virtual Education Abroad sessions on February 6 and 26 and a Business Study Tours session on February 8.

Take in an international student webinar

On February 14, international students can get information about filing a Canadian income tax return or learn how to bring a spouse or family members to Canada to stay or visit on February 26.

Practice self-care and connection

If you’re in the process of recovery, stop by this month’s Recovery on Campus gathering on February 7. It’s a safe, sober space to share your experiences, build a support system and learn about recovery.

Find some zen in the Library: PAWSS is there every Tuesday (check their webpage for other locations you can find them) or meet up for a group stretch on February 28.

Are you a mature student? Join us for a mixer on February 1.

Take in arts and culture on campus

If you haven’t had a chance yet, the -miut exhibition at the Mitchell Art Gallery runs through to the end of March and considers what it means to be an Inuk living on Treaty 6 and 7 lands.

MacEwan’s theatre students’ production of Twelfth Night may be sold out, but you can still get tickets to the March production of Sunday in the Park with George, one of the most acclaimed musicals of our time.

Don’t forget to rest and relax during Winter Reading Break from February 20 to 23.

For more information on these and other events throughout the month, head to MacEwan.ca/Events.
