Welcome (or welcome back) to MacEwan! Whether this is your first semester or your last, there is no shortage of things to check out this month. From concerts to workshops to author readings, you’re sure to find something to interest you – and all for free!

After enjoying your Labour Day long weekend, first-year students can head to campus on September 3 to learn about what their year at MacEwan is going to look like. New Student Orientation Day is about meeting professors, learning about services and resources, and figuring out where your classes will be this term.

It’s all hands on deck for the first day of classes on September 4.

After you’ve collected your syllabi that day, head down Capital Boulevard for the Downtown Campus Block Party. Get free food, entertainment and check out local art to celebrate the start of a new semester in the downtown core.

Keep the celebration going on Friday, September 6, when Fall Fest hits the front lawn outside of Building 6. The event, put on by the Students’ Association of MacEwan University (SAMU), features live music, beer gardens, food and more.

If you’re an international student and new to Canada, there are a lot of things that you may need to know to get settled. Attend New International Student Orientation on September 7, info sessions about co-op work permits on September 10 and 16, and a session on September 26 to find out how to bring your family to Edmonton for a visit.

We know student life can be expensive, and we’re here to help! Check out a drop-in session to learn about scholarships, awards and bursaries, and get on-site help with your application. Swing by on September 12, 16 or 24

Not loving one of your classes? Not a problem. Be sure to drop the class (or add another) by September 13. Anything you drop before that date won’t appear on your academic transcript – and you’ll even get some money back! Once your class list is fully locked in, don’t forget to pay your tuition and fees by September 30.

If you’ve finished your studies and are reading this piece for the back-to-school nostalgia, be sure to apply for Fall Convocation by September 15.

The Department of English kicks off its Visiting Authors Series with a reading from Astrid Blodgett. Learn about her journey as a writer and hear some of her recent short stories on September 16.

The Office of Sexual Violence Prevention, Education and Response is hosting two workshops this month. On September 17, attend Creating a Culture of Consent and learn about navigating consent in relationships, and supporting survivors of sexual assault. On September 25, Bringing in the Bystander will explore the concept of bystander intervention, and how to identify sexually inappropriate behaviour.

During your time at MacEwan, you’ll have opportunities for pursuing research with some of your profs, or on your own. But, like almost everything else, research takes money. Learn how to apply for student research grants at an info session with the Office of Research Services on September 25.

On September 26, kihêw waciston is hosting Truth First: Identity Fraud and Cultural Exploitation in the Age of Reconciliation, a conversation around those who assume an identity and culture that isn’t their own for personal benefit. The in-person event is sold out, but you can still register to watch the livestream online.

The month closes out with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. There will be no scheduled classes, but the campus will remain open. Keep an eye on the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre site for learning opportunities that day – and all year-round.

Be sure to check MacEwan.ca/Events throughout the month for more exciting things to do on and around campus.
