On May 28, MacEwan University officially launched the first issue of its new peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).
Developed and led by the university’s Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), the inaugural issue of Pedagogical Inquiry and Practice (PIP) highlights the work of MacEwan educators.
“We are emphasizing the contributions of MacEwan’s faculty, staff and students to the development of a teaching and learning culture,” says Dr. Galicia Blackman, PIP ‘s editor-in-chief and educational developer with CTL. “Our editorial board is comprised of faculty and staff from across the university who are committed to ensuring that the unique character of a teaching-focused institution will have a distinctive voice and leadership in SoTL.”
The 11 articles in the first edition of PIP include two research papers, a research brief that provides a snapshot of a study in progress, a scholarly conversation to explore teaching and learning practices, six essays that offer in-depth reflections on teaching and learning, and a book review that encourages readers to engage with emerging theories in higher education.
Future issues of the annual journal will welcome submissions from all Canadian post-secondary institutions. And while PIP joins several other SoTL publications and conferences in the academic landscape, Dr. Blackman says the journal will differentiate itself with a focus on meeting the needs of teaching-focused undergraduate institutions by advancing scholarly engagement, academic leadership and teaching excellence.
“The journal is an opportunity for internal and external collaboration among faculty, staff and students,” she says. “MacEwan provides a distinguished and distinguishable educational experience, and the journal is an opportunity for us to make that visible.”
