Was the 11th month the busiest one of 2025? Quite possibly. From Convocation to kefir and honey bottling to dart throwing, a lot happened at MacEwan in November.

We celebrated more than 800 MacEwan graduates who crossed the stage at the Winspear Centre with ceremonies, stories and, of course, many photos.

Dr. Bryan Edward Kolb, who has been recognized nationally and internationally for his groundbreaking work in advancing understanding of the human brain, was presented with a Doctor of the University honorary degree and shared remarks as part of the afternoon ceremony.

Griff kicked up his heels with performers at MacEwan’s annual Open House.

MacEwan’s Department of Theatre shared a provocative look at bullying, religious fanaticism, teenage sexuality and self-acceptance with Carrie The Musical.

Sorin Mihailovici, Design Studies ’08, Design Foundations ’06, Distinguished Alumni Award ’15, joined the MacEwan Marketing Club on campus for an inspiring keynote and to throw the dart that determined the destination for the next season of his reality show Travel by Dart.

MacEwan President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Annette Trimbee joined the mini assembly line of faculty, students and alumni in the Faculty of Health and Community Studies to pack backpacks filled with winter necessities for the Life Kits initiative, in partnership with Boyle Street Community Services.

MacEwan’s Model UN Club scored big on their home turf at the National Model UN Conference in Banff. Hosted by MacEwan, the conference brought together nearly 350 participants from universities around the world. MacEwan’s students, representing Switzerland, Ukraine and Czechia received the Outstanding Delegation Award, Outstanding Position Papers (Human Rights Council) and Outstanding Delegates in Committee (Human Rights Council).

MacEwan’s Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre was proud to support a 15-member delegation of faculty and students from four Ukrainian universities participating in the NMUN conference, including the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukrainian Catholic University, Kyiv School of Economics and Alfred Nobel University.

Spanish profs Dr. Erin Cowling and Dr. Cristina Ruiz-Serrano invited students to decorate altars to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican tradition that mixes Catholic death ceremonies and Indigenous rituals for the dead practiced before the Spanish conquest.

MacEwan Sustainability volunteers were busy bottling the 2025 crop of honey produced by the university’s bee colony – now available for purchase in the Bookstore.

MacEwan’s Interdisciplinary Dialogue Project kicked off early this year with an event that looked at drinking culture and the culture of drinking. Watch for more events tied to the theme, “Food Matters,” throughout the Winter term.

MacEwan’s kihêw waciston and Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre hosted a film and discussion evening with Ivan Rosypskye and Keith Thor Carlson, who shared stories in connection with the “Carving Lost History: Ukrainian and Indigenous Cultural Revival in the Face of Colonialism” project.

The Coalition for Harm Reduction at MacEwan (CHARM) marked National Addictions Awareness Week with stories of strength, a resource fair and an “Art Tasting” event in partnership with SAMU.

Biological Sciences students spent the Fall Reading Break at Vancouver Island’s Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, exploring tide pools, walking through rainforests and gaining renewed curiosity for the natural world.

MacEwan faculty joined community leaders to share ideas and identify opportunities for collaboration at an Office of Research Services ORX workshop in the university’s Immersive Learning Institute.

While the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta (CPA Alberta) was on campus, celebrating its longstanding relationship with MacEwan and its $500,000 donation toward the new School of Business building, guests got to sneak a peek at the construction site.

We welcomed Hon. Myles McDougall, Minister of Advanced Education, who spent a morning on campus with Dr. Trimbee, highlighting the university’s unique learning experiences and touring the site of the new School of Business.

A trip to a local pumpkin patch was only one of the many activities hosted by MacEwan International’s Buddy Program, which pairs incoming exchange students with student volunteers to help them settle into life at MacEwan and in Edmonton. The Mitchell Art Gallery teamed up with MacEwan’s sustainability team for an Art Buffet event focused on mending techniques to repair fabrics and reduce waste.
