Every year, we share hundreds of stories on MacEwan.ca/News that celebrate people, delve into issues, share discoveries and mark milestones. These are the pieces you read the most.
1. Celebrating greatness
We’re glad you appreciate honouring people just as much as we do! Each year, our Alumni Awards, Convocation awards and Teaching Awards (Distinguished Teaching, Early Career Excellence, Sessional Teaching Excellence and Teaching Leadership) stories are always near the top of most-read lists.
2. Welcoming a new chancellor
We officially welcomed MacEwan’s second chancellor in 2025. Gary Mar, installed as chancellor for a four-year term, is the university’s ceremonial head and works closely with leadership and the external community to build connections and relationships that increase MacEwan’s profile and contribute to realizing its vision.
3. Student research: Black pill vs. pink pill
Chadene Forrestor’s award-winning research into femcels caught really your attention. The psychology student’s work, titled “Black pill vs. pink pill,” looked at online symbols that send a message about a person’s level of dedication to an extremist ideology. She presented her research at the Ending Sexual Violence Research Forum and Student Research Day.
4. Griffins rebrand (the fake one and the real one)
Our April Fool’s Day story about the Griffins rebranding as the MacEwan Magpies in honour of the city’s official bird got almost as much attention as the MacEwan Athletics real rebrand that introduced a new logo in celebration of the Griffins’ 50 years in sport.
5. A new season of theatre
You’re always excited to see what MacEwan theatre students have in store, and this year was no exception. Our 2025 Theatre Season announcement was well-received, with impressive ticket sales for productions that had students staging The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Carrie: The Musical in the Fall term. Watch for Monceros and A Chorus Line in 2026!
6. A sneak peek inside the new building
Who doesn’t want the inside scoop? When Associate Vice-President, Infrastructure Planning and Management Robert Sabulka opened up about what will be inside the new School of Business building, you listened.
7. Marking a major milestone
We love sharing stories about our graduates, and we’re thrilled that you enjoy reading them! Missed out on meeting the Class of 2025? It’s not too late! Our Meet the Class stories live on at MacEwan.ca/Convocation.
8. Assisting students with off-campus housing
The university spent months collaborating with developers and property owners to find solutions for student housing. The initial pilot phase of the project involved local developers Qualico Properties and Maclab Development Group, offering students a discount on off-campus housing.
9. An editorial shift
Each year, we select an editorial theme that guides some of our long-form storytelling on MacEwan.ca/News. In 2025, we explored “Shift” with feature stories that looked at how MacEwan students, alumni and even the university’s strategic vision are smashing the calendar, how MacEwan faculty experts explore complex and challenging questions related to gender in their research and classrooms, and whether the AI revolution is here to stay.
10. New programs
Rounding out the top 10 stories were announcements of exciting new programs, including the Indigegogy minor and the Bachelor of Public Safety.
