Two years ago, we never would have met. I didn’t talk to anyone; I was just in my own bubble. Now, talking to people is my entire job. I love it – I’ll approach anyone just to say hi.
I’m here to answer questions that students – or anyone on campus – might have. The Welcome Centre is the first point of contact when someone comes in through the clock tower entrance, and we help people find what they’re looking for.
One day, a girl showed up and was really frustrated and upset. I listened and then guided her to the places where she could find help. When she came back later and thanked me, I realized that I can make a difference in someone’s day.
My favourite part of my job is the daily trivia. I like seeing people's reactions to the questions. Some days it’s super hard, but when people get it, they're so happy about starting off their day with that achievement. Sometimes, people walking by will let me know a fun fact, and I'll verify it so I can use it as a trivia question. It’s a great way to not only learn many random things, but to make a lot of new friends.
Since I was a child, I’ve wanted to open a cafe and bakery – a cozy place that feels like a second home for students. Working at the Welcome Centre has taught me about communication, collaboration and independence. All of those skills will help me achieve my dream. My high-school principal back home in India always told us to “dream, dare, do,” and I feel like this job is helping me live by that.
