From early spring blossoms to the end of another semester, April is a time of change. But one thing that never changes is the fact that campus is a busy place to be.
Scroll through some of the informative, exciting and fun events you can attend, from Student Research Day to art exhibitions to concerts for every musical taste.
Get involved
Kick off the month with a couple of activities on April 1. Head to kihêw waciston between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a crafting session where you can make big aunty earrings and enjoy community.
Then join the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity at the Metro Cinema for a screening of Il mio posto e' qui / My Place Is Here, an Italian film dealing with a hidden gay community and the outset of women’s suffrage in the aftermath of World War II.
If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the Faces of Exile: The Arrusi and the Policing of Gender and Sexuality in Fascist Italy Art Exhibition in the library, which ends on April 5.
Looking for a summer hobby? Come to the Community Garden Info Session on April 22 and learn how you can help out with (literal) growth on campus.
Celebrate student work
If you’re presenting at Student Research Day, this prep workshop will help get your project presentation-ready. Then, take what you learn (or come support your peers and learn a few things) at Student Research Day on April 23.
Future entrepreneurs making up the winter MacEwan Ventures cohort will pitch their business ideas to community judges at the showcase on April 2.
Get your creative juices flowing at Bowers: Studio Arts BFA Grad Show. The collection of artworks explores levels of a labyrinth, and will take over the Mitchell Art Gallery space from April 17 through 25. Meet the artists and learn about the exhibition at the opening reception on April 16.
Catch a concert
There are no shortage of performances this month, both from students and career musicians. Start off with the Big Band Concert, featuring everything from swing to Latin, on April 7.
On April 8, tap your toes along to the Percussion Ensemble Concert. The following evening, get a taste of pop, rock, funk, and everything in between at the Showcase Band and Country/Roots Ensemble Concert.
If you’ve heard all that before, catch some original compositions at the MacEwan Songwriters Evening on April 9 at the Blue Chair.
And don’t miss the Gene Zwozdesky Artist in Residence, ShockolaD, as the duo presents a Ukrainian Ethno Jazz Concert on April 10.
International students
The month is chock-full of information sessions for international students. Learn about preparing for your journey to MacEwan, networking with alumni and so much more. Check out MacEwan.ca/International for full event listings.
Important dates and deadlines
While most buildings and food services will be closed, Sport and Wellness will be open holiday hours on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
Final exams will run from April 13 to 21. Be sure to double-check your schedules for times and locations.
And if this exam season is your last, don’t forget to apply for Spring Convocation by April 15 so we can celebrate your hard work together at the Winspear Centre in June.
Not enough to keep you busy? Be sure to check MacEwan.ca/Events throughout the month for even more activities and entertainment.
