MacEwan’s Wellness Animals Giving Support program – WAGS for short – provides a chance for students like Sidney Mryglod to reset during busy school days.

“I just feel refreshed after a stop with WAGS,” says the third-year Bachelor of Science student. “Classes get rough at times, and I genuinely enjoy being able to take a few minutes to relax and pet a dog (or three).”

The Computer Science major attends various WAGS events and says the chance to connect with an animal on campus can help shift their entire day. “After visiting with the dogs, I find that something that I was struggling with earlier, like a difficult question on an assignment, is easier afterward.”

WAGS provides students with regular animal interactions. And though Mryglod first attended thinking it would be a good way to relax, they say WAGS events fill a void they’ve felt since being away from home – and their animals. “My family pets are a large part of my life. Having time with animals on campus makes my day so much better.”

Mryglod says that each dog has a unique personality – some come for pets, while others, like Bella, prefer to play before asking for belly rubs.

If you’re curious about Bella and other four-legged pals on campus, Mryglod recommends trying a zero-pressure, quick drop-in at first. And while there’s never pressure to stay at any event, it’s hard not to.

“You can hang out there for a quick 20-second pet, or you can stay for the entire event,” they say. “But don't get too distracted from your classes or homework!”
