1. New learning, lounging and study spaces

The Facilities staff has been hard at work over the summer giving several spaces on campus an update. Check out the new West Village Square on the main floor between Buildings 7 and 8, and its large monitor and wall display featuring rotating displays tied to Teaching Greatness and our place in O-day'min.

In Building 5, there are fresh new labs for biological sciences and Earth and planetary sciences, and Starbucks in Building 7 will be serving up coffee starting in September with a fresh, new, welcoming look.

2. Take advantage of all the free (or almost-free) stuff

This story answers the five most common questions Tech Support staff are asked AND includes info on how to get Microsoft Office 365 and a whole range of virtual apps. Students can also get a Grammarly Premium account for free, courtesy of the university’s Student Technology Fund.

When it comes to fun, useful, 100-per-cent-free stuff, stop by the new Makerspace location in the Library for 3D printing, scanning, programming, 360 cameras, button-makers and even a sewing station.

And don’t forget that your fees include access to Sport and Wellness – use the pool, gym and more with just your student ID card.

That’s not all! Did you know there’s a Massage Therapy Teaching Clinic on campus ($20 per 60-minute treatment!)? Students can also attend Griffins games for FREE (get your tickets in advance online) and all MacEwan Theatre Season and MacEwan Music Season shows at a discount. Not to mention all the great deals SAMU offers (everything from bookstore discounts to Oilers tickets) – check out the complete list.

Read the bulletin boards and find out what is happening. MacEwan University and SAMU know how to put on some amazing events.

3. See an advisor. Now.

If you’ve finished your first year and haven’t seen an academic advisor yet, GO NOW! Advisors can help you make sure you’re on the right track with your program, offer great information and insight about declaring a major or minor, and so much more. Not sure where to find your faculty or school’s academic advisor? Check here for the complete list.

It is okay not to know exactly what you want to do or take, and it’s okay to have doubts about what’s ahead. Don’t stress too much over it – you don’t know what doors may open once you look for a different path.

4. Get involved on campus

Now that you’ve got this whole university thing figured out, you might have extra time to get more involved on campus. Volunteering is a great way to do that – whether it’s working a single shift at an event or conference or signing up for a long-term commitment, there are many opportunities to choose from at MacEwan.ca/Volunteer.

Reach out for research or job opportunities, travel with colleagues, take field courses. This is your time to find and do what you love, make connections and create your career.
Ava Buchsdruecker, Bachelor of Science, Biological Sciences ’24

5. See the world

Maybe it’s time to think about taking the show on the road. Whether you’re interested in a summer program, exchange program, study tour or internship, MacEwan International has loads of opportunities for you to choose from.

I spent four months studying in Nagasaki, Japan, and saw some of the most amazing sights. I made a ton of memories and met many more amazing people.
