Get recognized for your engagement and sustainability efforts on campus. This certificate is awarded to students who demonstrate a consistent commitment to sustainability through volunteering and participating in sustainability-focused events and activities.
This is an opportunity to work towards a meaningful and attainable goal that increases student engagement and reinforces sustainability as a core value of the campus community. The certificate is noted on the Student Experience Record (SER), shared as a PDF, highlighted on social media and presented as a printed document at the year-end volunteer appreciation event.
Students can earn the certificate of recognition once per academic year (September to August).
Benefits
- formal recognition of sustainability-related experience
- development of transferable skills in leadership, collaboration and sustainability literacy
- enhanced résumé and graduate school application
Requirements
To earn the certificate of recognition within a single academic year (September to August), students must meet the following requirements:
- Volunteer with MacEwan Sustainability for a minimum of ten hours per semester across two semesters (typically fall and winter, though spring and summer opportunities are available), including at least two hours of tabling/outreach support.
- Attend a minimum of three MacEwan Sustainability events (e.g., workshops, presentations).
- Subscribe to the MacEwan Sustainability newsletter.
- Contribute either one blog post to MacEwan’s Green Scene (MacEwan Sustainability’s blog) OR one social media post for the MacEwan Sustainability Instagram (image with caption).
- Complete a sustainability-related project, either independently as part of coursework or in collaboration with MacEwan Sustainability initiatives.
Students must track their volunteer hours through Vome. A QR code for check-in/out is available at MacEwan Sustainability volunteer areas across campus (community garden, beehives, etc.) and at events, where you can check in with staff.
Note: Accommodations can be made for students who have gaps in their studies, are on co-op or exchange or have other special circumstances. You can reach out to the MacEwan Sustainability team to discuss flexible options.
Here is what your certificate will look like...except with your name on it! Plus, it will be noted on your Student Experience Record, available digitally as a PDF and presented to you at the MacEwan Sustainability year-end volunteer appreciation event.
