SUSTAINABILITY
Waste Reduction
Reduce, reuse, recycle. The first of three Rs is reduce, and we are committed to reducing waste on campus.
Through our partnership with Reusables, students, faculty and staff can enjoy a zero-waste takeout option that’s as easy and convenient as disposable packaging—only much better for the planet. Whenever you grab a meal in a Reusables container, you cut down landfill waste and shrink your carbon footprint.
How the program works
- Create a Reuser ID and add it to your mobile wallet. If you don’t create an account, you’ll be prompted to tap your payment card or mobile wallet at checkout instead.
- When ordering food at Takam Market, Zoca or The Burger Place, ask for a Reusables container instead of a single-use, disposable container.
- Scan your account barcode and Reusables container at the checkout using the provided device.
- Enjoy your food, rinse the container, and return it to one of the Reusables drop-off bins outside Takam Market in Building 9 or the Building 6 cafeteria within 5 days. Don’t forget to scan the container on the tablet beside the bin before dropping it in.
If you forget to return your Reusables container within 5 days, you will be charged $7 for the cost of the container. However, this charge is fully refundable if you return the container within 30 days.
If you experience issues with your Reusables account or have an incorrect charge for a returned container, please contact support@reusables.com.
Paper and bottle recycling bins are located throughout campus. We continue to review the ways we manage waste, with an eye to providing even more effective recycling options.
MacEwan has a compost pick-up program that diverts organic waste from landfills, promotes environmentally friendly practices among students, staff and faculty and lowers MacEwan’s greenhouse gas emissions. Designated bins are strategically placed across campus, making it easy for members of MacEwan and the community to dispose of their organic waste properly. The collected compost is transported to a local facility and the resulting nutrient-rich solid amendment is used by local farms.
Coffee is a very important requirement in many peoples’ lives. Whether you are staying up late, waking up early or just pushing through a major assignment, the difference a cup of coffee makes can seem monumental. But coffee cups are also one of the largest waste contributors on campus, so we’ve tried to find ways to help reduce the number of disposable cups being used. Receive a 10 cent to 25 cent discount from our retail stores on campus when you use a reusable mug.
