Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

MacEwan University uses multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all faculty, staff, student and alumni accounts to keep everyone’s information more safe.

What is MFA?

MFA is a security measure that requires users to provide more than one form of verification to access an account or system, adding an extra layer of protection beyond your username and password.

This makes it harder for unauthorized users to access accounts.

How does MFA work?

When you login, you’ll be asked to use an app as a second form of verification to access your account or a system.

Setting up MFA for your account

For students

You will be asked to set up multi-factor authentication when setting up your MacEwan ID.

When logging in with your username and password, you’ll be asked to verify your login and to download the Microsoft Authenticator app – which is the easiest and safest method.

You can also choose to use Google Authenticator instead of the Microsoft Authenticator if you prefer.

Visit our student MFA help page for instructions on how to register and set up your device.

For faculty and staff

Faculty and staff can set up multi-factor authentication using:

  • A phone number (voice call)
  • A mobile device (text message)
  • Smart phone or tablet using the DUO Mobile application.

The preferred and most secure option is to install DUO.

You will be asked to verify your account when using any MacEwan applications like:

  • email
  • myPortal
  • Microsoft apps
  • Google apps
  • mêskanâs

Visit our MFA help page for instructions on how to register and set up your device.

MFA protects your account and your data from unauthorized access by requiring anyone with MacEwan credentials to present two methods of authentication. It’s a way to add another layer of security to all accounts, keeping personal, institutional and research data safe.
