ACCOMMODATED EXAMS

If you encounter barriers with timed assessments, such as in-class essays, quizzes and exams, we can support you by providing a more accessible environment.

Exam accommodations

If you experience any of the following situations, you may find the suggested exam accommodations helpful. Note that this list is not comprehensive. If you experience other barriers, please let us know.

  • Exams in standard print format are not accessible to you. You need alternate format accommodations.
  • Writing out responses by hand during your exam is inaccessible or too slow to be practical. You need more time to write the exam than has been allotted and an alternate means of providing the answers, such as a scribe or assistive technology.
  • Unavoidable classroom distractions make it difficult for you to focus on your exam. You need a more isolated setting for writing the exam.
  • Regular exam time passes too quickly for you to process and complete the exam. You need more time to write the exam.
  • The classroom chairs and desks make it difficult for you to be comfortable. You require specialized furniture (such as an adjustable table or ergonomic chair) to sit comfortably and reduce physical pain.
  • The overhead lights in the classroom make it difficult for you to focus or to see. You require a room with low-lighting to write the exam.

If you anticipate that you will need accommodations for timed assessments, such as in-class essays, quizzes and exams, you are required to meet with a learning specialist to discuss barriers and determine the appropriate accommodations. You can learn more about this booking on the Request Accommodations page in the student portal.

This meeting may take place before the term begins or at any point during the term. The meeting has to take place before you can book an exam, and the booking has to take place a minimum of seven days before your exam takes place.

Exam accommodation details are forwarded to the Exam Centre and stored in your student file. To keep the information current, the process is reviewed with you at the beginning of each academic term.

You are required to share your current accessibility/accommodation letter with the instructors for whose courses you require exam accommodations.

There are several things you need to know about booking an exam.
