Spring is here, and we’re wrapping up the Winter term with a month filled with events and activities – music, film, research and much more. So grab your phone and get ready to put some exciting April events into your calendar.

April is MacEwan’s Month of Scholarship – a time to learn about and celebrate research and creative work. Kick off the month with a session from Dr. Rodney Schmaltz on April 2 that challenges students and faculty to embrace storytelling and move beyond bullet points when presenting their academic work. Then, plan to stop by the Robbins Health Learning Centre Atrium on April 19 for our annual Student Research Day featuring more than 200 poster presentations, oral presentations, creative installations/performances and project displays.

Month of Scholarship is also the perfect time to add Research Recast(ed) from the Office of Research Services and Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications (FFAC) to your podcast playlist.

Speaking of FFAC, make sure to pick up your tickets for the MacEwan Music Season. Between April 2 and 4 music students are capping off the semester with a series of concerts from the MacEwan Big Band, Showcase Band, Country and Roots Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble. If new work is more your jam, check out the Songwriter’s Concert on April 6. And wrap up the music season on April 7 by helping the Contemporary Combos groups wrap up their first year at MacEwan. Go to MacEwan.ca/MusicSeason for the complete list of concerts and to buy tickets.

Can’t make it in person? Experience performances virtually by subscribing to MacEwan Music on YouTube and checking out the Concert Series playlist

The MacEwan University Conservatory of Music quartet in residence is also taking to the stage this month. Join the Garneau String Quartet for a concert on April 8.

April 8 also marks the last day of Winter 2024 classes (where has the time gone?), and April 9 is the withdrawal deadline. Final exams start on April 10 (pop by the library that day if you need to stretch your body before you stretch your mind) and run through until April 18. Good luck, everyone!

If these are the last exams of your program, you will also want to apply for Spring Convocation by April 15.

And while we’re on the subject of graduation, the Mitchell Art Gallery is hosting Safekeeping: Studio Arts BFA 2024 Graduate Exhibition on April 5. Stop by to take in the work of the first students majoring in Studio Arts to graduate from MacEwan’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program.

Head down to Metro Cinema for the Ukrainian Film Festival from April 12 to 14, hosted in partnership with MacEwan’s Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre. Take in six Ukrainian movies that weekend – for free!

National Volunteer Week (April 14 to 20) is a great time to visit MacEwan.ca/Volunteer and sign up for a range of volunteer opportunities. Not sure which volunteer gig is right for you? Here are eight great ways to make an impact by volunteering on campus

That was a lot – and we haven’t even covered it all! CHARM is hosting a Harm Reduction Resource Fair on April 2, the monthly gathering of Recovery on Campus is on April 4 and new events are being added to MacEwan.ca/Events all the time. Check it out for a complete listing of events happening at MacEwan this month (and beyond).
