The pedways and hallways may be a bit quieter, but June is always a big month at MacEwan. With National Indigenous History Month, Spring Convocation, Pride Month and more, there’s no shortage of things to do on and around campus.
National Indigenous History Month
In June, we recognize the rich and storied history, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across the country. Here on campus, the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre will host several celebratory and educational events to mark the month.
On June 2, head over to the kihêw waciston Gathering Space (9-115U) for a lunchtime screening of the powerful documentary Ahkameyimok: To Persevere. Witness stories of healing, culture and community, followed by a question-and-answer session with Knowledge Keeper Tom Snow. This event is free, but please RSVP to attend.
On the afternoon of Saturday, June 7, kihêw waciston will recognize Indigenous grads with an event in the green space outside the Indigenous centre. Stop by from 1 to 4 p.m. to celebrate our grads and shop at the Indigenous market.
Later that day, the Indigenous Music Showcase will fill the Triffo Theatre with music featuring Juno Award-winning Sebastian Gaskin, along with Miracle Spotted Bear and emcee Cedar T. Tickets are free for MacEwan students, faculty and staff – just register using your MacEwan email address and coupon code SHOWCASE1. Everyone is welcome, and general admission tickets are $20. Get yours at Tickets.MacEwan.ca.
Pride Month
In addition to hosting our very own Pride Week on campus held every March, the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity (CSGD) partners with Edmonton organizations to host events celebrating the queer community here in the city for Pride Month.
On Wednesday, June 13, grab your lunch and head over to the Village Garden (outside, just south of Building 7) to join CSGD for a Pride Picnic with light refreshments, games and a great sense of community.
Spring Convocation
Congratulations to the Class of 2025! If you’re one of the thousands of students graduating this spring, stop by campus for the Convocation Kickoff Fair on June 11 and 12 on the main floor of Building 7, where you can pick up your cap and gown, participate in activities and get discounts from vendors, including the MacEwan Bookstore.
Convocation ceremonies will be held at the Winspear Centre from June 17 to 19. On June 17, celebrate the Faculty of Arts and Science; graduates from the Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Health and Community Studies, and School of Continuing Education will cross the stage on June 18; and on June 19, the ceremonies wrap up with the School of Business and the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications.
Be sure to tune in to the webcast of the ceremonies to hear convocation addresses and watch our grads receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates.
And that’s not all!
There are plenty of other events lined up to indulge your artistic interests, keep you active and prepare you for the Fall term.
The Mitchell Art Gallery welcomes artist Anna Binta Diallo whose exhibition Those mountains of shadows and valleys of light will take centre-stage in the gallery until August 8. Stop by to explore the ancient and contemporary tools we use to map and navigate land, water and sky.
Everyone loves MacEwan’s bees! Learn more about how we can help pollinators thrive at the Protecting Pollinators event on June 4 with the Edmonton and Area Land Trust.
Love gardening? Celebrate the opening of MacEwan’s Community Garden on June 11 at 12 p.m. by planting some native flowers and vegetables – and eating ice cream! Then stop by again on June 25 to learn how to make seed bombs (small balls of clay, compost and native seeds you can toss into garden beds or vacant green spaces to help restore pollinator habitats.)
Know someone who is getting ready to begin their university journey? Encourage them to save an hour for Understanding University Fundamentals, an online webinar that runs every Tuesday throughout the summer. Academic advisors will cover key dates, course planning, how the enrolment system works and much more.
Looking for a way to extend your summer adventures? Attend an online Education Abroad Information Session on June 23 to learn about the locations you can travel to while earning your credentials.
Set aside a lunch hour on June 25 for a Career Development Session to see how to identify and articulate the skills you’re developing as a student researcher into language employers love.
