After a national search process, MacEwan University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Edvard Lorkovic to an initial five-year term as deputy provost. He will continue to hold his concurrent faculty appointment in the Department of Humanities.

Dr. Lorkovic has been a member of the MacEwan community since 2006, serving as philosophy coordinator, chair of humanities, interim dean of arts and science, and most recently interim deputy provost. Over nearly two decades at the university, he has established himself as a thoughtful teacher, a trusted colleague and a steady leader whose contributions have shaped both his discipline and the wider institution.

“As the person on campus who ponders in the middle of the night the percentage of senior colleagues who taught intro courses last year, it has been a godsend for the provost to know that Ed has that answer,” observes Dr. Craig Monk, provost and vice-president, Academic. “He has learned the ins and outs of the business of academic affairs, and he has proven that when we need to draw together Student Affairs, MacEwan International, the registrar’s office and the dean of a faculty to troubleshoot an issue, he can get everyone on the same page to assure the high-quality student experience for which we are known.”

During his interim appointment, Dr. Lorkovic helped strengthen the university’s focus on the priorities that shape academic strategy.  As deputy provost, Dr. Lorkovic will work closely with the provost to pursue the goals of Teaching Greatness. In his new role, he will oversee athletics, academic quality assurance and faculty development, while representing MacEwan on committees and with external partners.

The recommendation to appoint Dr. Lorkovic was made to President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Annette Trimbee by a committee of nominees and volunteers: Dr. Khalaf Al-Jarrah, School of Business; Dr. Craig Kuziemsky, associate vice-president, Research; Dr. Carla Lam, faculty development; Stacey Martin, provost’s office; Lindsay McAlpine, athletics; Isabella Nikolaidis, academic quality assurance; Dr. Christy Raymond, dean of nursing; and Allie Spenrath, student representative. The committee was assisted by Helen Ngan-Paré, associate vice-president, Human Resources, as it worked through more than two dozen applications from qualified candidates across Canada.

Dr. Lorkovic’s formal appointment as deputy provost begins immediately.
