Ahhh, February. We may be right smack-dab in the middle of winter, but this is Edmonton. We’re not going to let chilly temps or short days hold us back. February is short – but not on activities. Buckle up and get ready for an action-packed 28 days of events on campus.
Join Edmonton’s Historian Laureate as we kick off Black History Month with the opening ceremonies on February 2, then mark your calendar for events throughout the month that are part of MacEwan’s new Human Rights Learning Series: Art Buffet, Roots and Rhythm, Unpacking the N-Word and a gala ceremony cohosted with the Black Students’ Alliance will centre on honouring and recognizing the legacies of Black Canadians, and how they shape our communities. Visit MacEwan.ca/BlackHistoryMonth for the full list of events.
February 3 is the first of many opportunities throughout the month to connect at the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre. Join a weekly sharing circle with Knowledge Keepers for tea, bannock, health, connection, shared wisdom and casual conversation. Then, keep the conversation going at the 2S Indigequeer Tea and Talk with Kristie Benson on February 6 and 27 from 12-1 p.m.
Feel more like listening than talking? Stop by Storytelling with George on Mondays or Tuesdays, with a special edition on Thursday, February 12. Join anthropology prof Brittany Johnson to learn about the colonial history of gynecology with a beaded vulva project on February 11 (RSVP required – email kw@macewan.ca). Check out the kihêw waciston Facebook page for full details on all of these activities.
On February 5, Coalition for Harm Reduction at MacEwan (CHARM) is hosting a Harm Reduction Resource Fair. Stop by to learn more about harm reduction, get skills to support informed decisions and connect with community agencies.
Think Valentine’s Day is all about hearts and candy? Think bigger. At MacEwan, we spend the week leading up to February 14 focused on building relationships – friendships, dating relationships, partnerships and community connections – that make us feel safe, cared for and respected.
Start Healthy Relationships Week with a walk through the booths at the skills fair on February 9. Then, get your creative juices flowing at the Healthy Relationships Week Craft and Chat, Art Buffet and Make Your Own Valentine events throughout the week. Wrap things up with Your Brain on Love on February 12 and find out how to use your brain to help your heart find the healthy love you’re looking for.
While you’re on campus February 12, grab a friend (or even your family – Family Day is right around the corner, after all) and enjoy a musical walk across campus. Our first Downtown Artist Amble runs from 5 to 6 p.m. and features MacEwan alumni musicians and friends performing across campus. RSVP here.
We know you’re excited about Winter Reading Break from February 17 to 20, but before you go, there are a few things you might want to check off your academic (and career-building) to-do list in February.
It may not feel like it, but now is the time to prepare for summer employment and the Summer Career Fair on February 4 can help! Why not spend the lunch hour that same day figuring out how to get the best grades on your midterm with Midterm Madness? It might just help your job prospects. If the “life experiences” impact of your resume could use a boost, stop by one of the Education Abroad info sessions on February 4, 13 or 23. And make sure to declare your major/minor (if your program requires it). The last day to declare is February 10.
When you’re back from Winter Reading Break, all rested and ready to go, we’ve got a lot to get you thinking. This is the perfect time to apply to present at Student Research Day in April. Not sure how to tell your research story? We’ve got you. Stop by How to Tell Your Research Story on February 26.
Later that day, listen to three researchers – Dr. Aidan Forth, Dr. Alissa Overend and Dr. Henry Prown – share their insight at Unnatural Disasters: The History and Politics of Famines as part of the Interdisciplinary Dialogue Project. Register here.
Finish up a very busy month in one of the most proactive ways possible, by signing up for a Bystander Intervention Workshop on February 27.
