Mother Nature may be sending mixed signals, but there’s no question that June will be a hot month for events at MacEwan.

Indigenous fashion takes centre stage

National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month converge with Revitalization on the Runway on June 5. A partnership between the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre, the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity (CSGD) and the MacEwan Indigenous Students’ Club celebrates Indigenous resilience, creativity and community through fashion. Six Indigenous designers, two performers, a DJ and a diverse lineup of Indigenous models will bring the runway to life.

Pride Picnic brings downtown communities together

Later in the month, CSGD and NorQuest Pride are teaming up for a downtown Pride Picnic. Grab your lunch and head to MacEwan’s Community Garden (between Buildings 7 and 8) on June 25 for music, performances, games and prizes.

Celebrate the Class of 2026

On June 15, kihêw waciston is kicking off the week of Spring Convocation by celebrating Indigenous grads with an honour ceremony, activities and an Indigenous Market in Allard Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend the market.

Congratulations to all members of the Class of 2026! If you’re one of the thousands of students graduating this spring, stop by campus for the Convocation Kickoff Fair on June 10 and 11 in the Multi-Purpose Room in the Cafeteria in Building 6, where you can pick up your cap and gown, participate in activities and get discounts from vendors.

Convocation ceremonies will be held at the Winspear Centre from June 16 to 19. On June 16, celebrate the Faculty of Arts and Science; graduates from the Faculty of Health and Community Studies and the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications cross the stage on June 17; on June 18, we celebrate graduates of the Triffo School of Business; and the ceremonies wrap up on June 19 with the Faculty of Nursing and School of Continuing Education.

Be sure to tune in to the webcast of the ceremonies to hear convocation addresses and watch our grads receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates.

StoryWalk highlights Indigenous storytelling and belonging

The latest StoryWalk at MacEwan title also celebrates National Indigenous History Month. We Belong to the Drum written by Sandra Lamouche and illustrated by Azby Whitecalf tells the story of Nikosis, a young boy learning what it means to belong through love, culture and the steady heartbeat of the drum. Grounded in nêhiyawêwin (the Plains Cree language) and the drum as the heartbeat of Mother Earth, the story reminds us of how important it is for children to see themselves reflected, welcomed and celebrated.

Summer camps inspire the next generation of students

Speaking of young people, we’re gearing up to host hundreds of them at summer camps in July and August! Many Junior Griffins Camps and Swim & Play Camps are full, but there are some spaces here and there, so it’s worth checking them out. High school students interested in graphic and app design, illustration, photography and videography can spend a week at Design Summer Camp. Musically inclined teens will want to check out a week-long music workshop from August 18 to 21, where they can study jazz, rock and R&B with professional musicians. And the Department of Communications is hosting its Communications Bootcamp in August, empowering young voices and providing hands-on media experience for under-represented youth in Grades 10 to 12.

Get creative at Art Buffet

The Mitchell Art Gallery is busy getting ready for its next exhibition, but if you’re itching to be creative, make sure to stop by Art Buffet every Wednesday from 12 to 4 p.m. in the Allard Hall Atrium.

There’s plenty to experience at MacEwan this June, whether you’re marking a milestone with Convocation, getting creative on campus or celebrating Indigenous culture. Check out these MacEwan community voices on what we should be thinking about on National Indigenous Peoples Day.
