Pension, Benefits and Time Away

At MacEwan University, we provide employees with a total compensation package that is competitive, comprehensive and aligned with our commitment to work-life balance.

Flexible benefits plan

Our benefits plan offers a full range of health, dental and insurance options. Our competitive options are flexible for single, couple and family benefits. You also choose from four different levels of coverage (core, basic, comprehensive and enhanced) and have the option to adjust them annually. New benefit-eligible employees are covered from the first day of employment.

Check the collective agreements and the Employment Policy for Out-of-Scope Employees for eligibility details.

FACULTY AND STAFF AGREEMENTS

What’s included?

With multiple coverage options, benefit-eligible employees have the freedom to choose the best supports for personal wellness and overall health. Plus, you can adjust coverage each year to fit your changing needs. Our benefits plan offers a variety of coverage, including the following:

You can choose from four levels of health care coverage annually.

Our health care benefits include the following:

  • prescription drugs
  • medical services and supplies
  • vision and paramedical services
  • mental health supports

Our dental coverage is flexible and comprehensive, with four levels to choose from annually.

Our dental benefits include the following:

  • basic services such as examinations and cleanings
  • major services such as onlays or crown restorations
  • orthodontic care

Our insurance benefits help protect you and your loved ones. You can update your level of coverage annually.

Our insurance coverage includes the following types:

  • life insurance
  • disability insurance
  • critical illness insurance
  • travel insurance

The Wellness Spending Account (WSA) is a new addition to our benefits plan. If you choose the core or basic level of health and dental coverage, you can add any leftover flex credits to the WSA. However, the money you allocate to the WSA gets added to your taxable income for federal income tax purposes when you spend it, and any unused WSA funds must be used within two years.

The WSA covers a wide range of expenses, including these:

  • fitness equipment for your home
  • family care
  • nutritional counselling and weight loss programs
  • non-health professional services such as legal or financial counselling

If you are an out-of-scope (OOS) employee at MacEwan, you are eligible for a taxable benefit from the Out-of-Scope Flex Fund to support your health, wellness and professional development. You receive two payments of $500 each year—one around April 1 and another around October 1.

You must be an active OOS employee on March 31 and September 30 to be eligible. These direct payments give you immediate access to funds, so you can use them for wellness or development activities as they come up without submitting expenses for reimbursement.

For more details, refer to the Out-of-Scope Employee Handbook.

Check MacEwan's Flexible Benefits Plan Summary for an overview of our benefits.

Employee and Family Assistance Program

MacEwan’s Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) offers confidential counselling and support to you and your family for personal and work-related challenges, including mental health concerns.

EFAP services can help with the following:

  • well-being support
  • relationship and family issues
  • workplace challenges
  • addiction
  • child and elder care resources
  • legal advice
  • financial help

For more information, download the EFAP wallet card.

Pension

At MacEwan University, a pension plan is a key part of your total compensation package and one of the most valuable benefits we offer our eligible employees.

The Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP), administered by the Alberta Pensions Administration (APS), is a defined benefit plan based on both employee and employer contributions. Your pension at retirement is based upon a formula that includes your length of pensionable service and your highest five-year average pensionable salary.

For more detailed information regarding the plan, visit LAPP.ca or refer to LAPP At-a-glance and the LAPP Member Handbook.
