Apply & enrol

Applying to Open Studies is fast and easy. Just a few steps will get you started.

Application Process

How to apply depends on your previous education and student status:

To access courses, you must apply through ApplyAlberta and pay the nonrefundable application fee. After you become an Open Studies student, you use the university's online registration system, myStudentSystem, to enrol in courses. If you do not attend any classes for 12 months, you will have to apply again.

If you have enrolled in Open Studies at MacEwan University within the last 12 months, your file is still active and you do not need to reapply. Use your existing MacEwan University Network ID and password to enrol in classes. If you've forgotten your ID or password, contact technology support.

Note: if you have already completed the maximum of 24 credits, you will not be eligible to return to Open Studies.

If you have not enrolled in any classes within the last 12 months, you will need to reapply to Open Studies via ApplyAlberta and pay the nonrefundable application fee.

To take a course at MacEwan University as a visiting student you must provide a letter of permission from your home institution. Review the process to apply as a visiting student before you enrol in classes.

International students considering Open Studies are encouraged to speak with an international recruiter before submitting an application.

Note:

  • International students in Open Studies are not eligible to work off campus.
  • Letters of Admission are not issued for Open Studies, which will impact study permit eligibility.

Enrolment process

Enrol in your courses using myStudentSystem. If you have any trouble, contact us.

After you apply, the Office of the University Registrar will send your Network ID to the email account listed on your application. This will be the username and password you use to log in to myPortal.MacEwan.ca. If you have not received your Network ID within one hour of your application, email admissions@macewan.ca. Don't forget to check your junk mail folder, it may be waiting for you there.

The university’s student portal is where you can find links to several online applications and tools for students, such as:

  • Gmail: your student email account
  • myStudentSystem: to search for and enrol in classes
  • paskwâwi-mostos mêskanâs: for online components of your courses
  • Library access: to search for books, articles, and more
  • Tech Support: for troubleshooting help

myPortal.MacEwan.ca

  • Launch myStudentSystem from myPortal.MacEwan.ca
  • Go to the Manage Classes tile in myStudentSystem.

Courses that show “Reserve Limit in Effect: 0” or “Rsrvd: Open Studies” are available to Open Studies students. Enrolment limits apply; you may register or join the waitlist for a maximum of 6 credits per term.

Once you are admitted, you will be eligible to enrol in classes on or after the Open Enrolment date for each term:

  • Open Enrolment for Spring/Summer 2024 term opens on February 14, 2024.
  • Open Enrolment for Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 terms begins on June 10, 2024.
