1. New spaces, signage and stops
Follow the new turtle mosaic tiles across campus to reach kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre – a welcoming space for Indigenous students and allies. Artist Theodora Harasynmiw consulted with MacEwan’s Knowledge Keepers George Desjarlais, Daphne Alexis and Tom Snow on the creation and installation of the mosaics, and staff, students and community members contributed tiles for use in the new art pieces.
Head to the library to find the new children’s reading area, complete with books for all ages and comfortable, fun seating options. From there, go downstairs to find some new brand-new food options in the Building 6 cafeteria, including a new spot for smash burgers and milkshakes.
Outside, you’ll notice disruption due to construction. Due to the incoming Valley Line West LRT along 104 Ave to the new School of Business building going up on the north side of campus, detours and road closures might affect your travel times. Keep an eye on the project website for major changes!
2. Take advantage of all the free (or almost-free) stuff
In addition to answering the five most common questions Tech Support staff are asked, this story includes info on how to get Microsoft Office 365 and a whole range of virtual apps. Students can also get a Grammarly Premium account for free, courtesy of the university’s Student Technology Fund.
When it comes to fun, useful, 100-per-cent-free stuff, stop by the new Makerspace location in the Library for 3D printing, scanning, programming, 360 cameras, button-makers and even a sewing station.
And don’t forget that your fees include access to Sport and Wellness – use the pool, gym and more with just your student ID. Find out how to get your digital ID here.
That’s not all! Did you know there’s a Massage Therapy Teaching Clinic on campus ($20 per 60-minute treatment!)? Students can also attend Griffins games for FREE (get your tickets in advance online) and all MacEwan Theatre Season and MacEwan Music Season shows at a discount. Not to mention all the great deals SAMU offers (everything from bookstore discounts to Oilers tickets) – check out the complete list.
3. See an advisor. Now.
If you’ve finished your first year and haven’t seen an academic advisor yet, GO NOW! Advisors can help you make sure you’re on the right track with your program, offer great information and insight about declaring a major or minor, and so much more. Not sure where to find your faculty or school’s academic advisor? Check here for the complete list.
4. Get involved on campus
Now that you’ve got this whole university thing figured out, you might have extra time to get more involved on campus. Volunteering is a great way to do that – whether it’s working a single shift at an event or conference or signing up for a long-term commitment, there are many opportunities to choose from.
You can also take on a research project, get work experience, enter a competition and more. Check out MacEwan.ca/Opportunities to explore all the ways you can get involved.
5. See the world
Maybe it’s time to think about taking the show on the road. Whether you’re interested in a summer program, exchange program, study tour or internship, MacEwan International has loads of opportunities for you to choose from.
